An Appeal for Assistance for Media Practitioners in the typhoon-raved Panay Island in the Philippines
Nenita Hobilla of the television network GMA was in the middle of an out-of-town coverage on the flash flood on the wake of Typhoon Frank (international codename Fengshen) last June 21 when she remembered her two children back in Iloilo City. She could not do anything amid the rising waters so she asked her colleague, Gerthrode Tan-Baterina to save them. But the floodwaters claimed Baterina’s vehicle and she was forced to climb up a tree to save herself from drowning. Hobilla’s children were found safe later. [

phenomenon to be discussed in coming media forum
Senior Filipino journalists
will gather Wednesday at the Richmonde Hotel in Pasig
City for a discussion on the reportage of human rights
violations, particularly torture, as they are being perpetrated
in the Philippines. The activity coincides with the worldwide
commemoration of the UN International Day in Support of
Victims of Torture (every June 26th).[

to hold 5th safety training for journalists
There is no better time
than now. Recognizing the challenges and risks that journalists
face, the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines
(NUJP) has been holding a series of safety trainings for
journalists since last year. The training campaign, implemented
under its Media Safety Program, seeks to equip journalists
with practical skills that will help minimize the risks
they face during coverage.[

On two separate instances,
the constitutionally guaranteed rights of journalists
were grossly violated by members of the Subic Bay Metropolitan
Authority (SBMA) Law Enforcement Department and an officer
of the Olongapo regional trial court branch 72. [
