Torture phenomenon to be discussed in coming media forum

Senior Filipino journalists will gather Wednesday at the Richmonde Hotel in Pasig City for a discussion on the reportage of human rights violations, particularly torture, as they are being perpetrated in the Philippines. The activity coincides with the worldwide commemoration of the UN International Day in Support of Victims of Torture (every June 26th).

Main speakers at the forum include Basil Fernando of the Hong Kong-based Asian Human Rights Commission, Carlos Conde of the New York Times, Renato Mabunga of the Philippine Alliance of Human Rights Advocates, and Ernesto Anasarias Jr of the Balay Rehabilitation Center.

Basil Fernando is a Sri Lankan lawyer and a former senior UN human rights officer in Cambodia. He has written extensively on human rights issues in Asia and has published several books.

Invited panel reactors also include major personalities in Philippine human rights and media circles.

Topics include "Torture: the true situation," "Resisting torture: a lonely struggle,""Reporting on torture: breakthroughs and barriers," and "Torture reporting in the context of anti-terrorism."

The whole-day forum is being organized for the Philippines by the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines, in cooperation with the International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims (Denmark), the International Federation for Human Rights (France), and Balay Rehabilitation Center, Inc. (Philippines).
