[Alert] CDO journos post bail for 18-year-old libel case

 

Journalists Herbie Gomez and Joey Nacalaban surrendered to the Agora Police Station in Cagayan de Oro City today, July 6, after a Warrant of Arrest was issued against them over a libel case.

The P5-million libel case was filed by Tangub City Mayor Jennifer Wee-Tan in 2003 in relation to an article that Gomez — former editor of Mindanao Gold Star Daily — and Nacalaban — photojournalist of Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro — produced on local government officials who went on an all-expense-paid trip to Germany courtesy of a power company that has a controversial power project in Misamis Oriental.

Prior to today, the two journalists were also arrested and detained over the same case in May 2003.

Both have paid bail bonds of P10,000 each to secure their temporary liberty.

Libel in the Philippines remains a criminal offense.
