ALERT: Sorsogon broadcaster found dead

Jan. 10, 2019

A broadcaster was found dead in a massage parlor in Sorsogon City with initial reports indicating he may have been the victim of foul play.

Community news outfit BicolToday.com said John Michael “Jelai” Decano, the Sorsogon City reporter of Casiguran-based Passalinggaya FM Radio, was found around 1:15 p.m. Wednesday, January 9, at Allan’s Massage and Parlor on Peralta St.

Citing initial reports, BicolToday said Decano appeared to have been bludgeoned with a “kalan” or cement stove by a still unidentified killer.

Police are still investigating the case and have not yet determined a motive for Decano’s murder.

Thus far, 12 journalists have been confirmed killed under the Duterte administration.

On December 28, Gabriel Alburo of station 94.5 dyJL FM in Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental was shot dead by motorocyle-riding gunmen. However, police said he was killed because of an altercation over a cockfighting bet.

If Decano’s murder is found to be work-related, he would be the 13th slain under the current administration and the 186th since 1986.
