[Alert] Kalinga journalists sued for cyber-libel in Isabela

The publisher and editor-in-chief of a community paper in Kalinga are facing a cyberlibel complaint that the mayor of the provincial capital Tabuk filed with the provincial prosecutor’s office in Cabagan, Isabela, some 100 kilometers away.

Also included in the complaint filed by Tabuk Mayor Darwin Estranero against Brent Martinez, editor-in-chief, and Ghumie Pinkihan, publisher, of Guru Press, was Sunshine Sabado Busaing, a job-order employee at the Office of the Vice Mayor, who shared the allegedly libelous article on her Facebook page.

The case stemmed from articles published in July and August this year about the allegedly overpriced purchase of thermal scanners, among others. Similar articles on the issue also saw print in the national dailies Philippine Star and Manila Times.

Martinez claims Estranero had filed a similar complaint against them with the National Bureau of Investigation early this year.
