The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) has launched its digital campaign commemorating the upcoming 10th anniversary of the November 23, 2009 Ampatuan massacre, which claimed the lives of 58 persons, 32 of them media workers.
In observance of the 116th month since the violent carnage, NUJP on July 23 launched the “Ampatuan Massacre 10 Years” campaign with its members changing profile photos on social media using a GIF of a blinking eye representing that someone is watching over the issue.
The group also released today, July 25, a one-minute video urging the public to support the victims’ families’ quest for justice, as they patiently wait for Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 221’s verdict on the case.
“Almost a decade after the worst incident of electoral violence in recent Philippine history and the single deadliest attack on the press ever, not a single suspect has yet been convicted,” said NUJP chairman Nonoy Espina.
Espina said that the slow wheels of justice “is an indictment of the culture of impunity and our damaged justice system that, after so long, the victims’ kin continue to cry for ‘Justice Now, Convict Ampatuan.’”
“And while the gruesome incident will never be forgotten, it is a sad fact that attention has also waned over the years,” he added.
The “Ampatuan Massacre 10 Years” digital campaign was created and developed by NUJP’s partners at Octopus&Whale, a Manila-based game and brand agency led by award-winning creative director, web developer and writer Joey Tiempo.
