Pushing back against Cyberattacks on PH Media

The forum held last April 29, 2022, aimed to promote awareness on the cyberattacks against the Philippine media during the Duterte administration.

Kim Cantillas, secretary general of the Computer Professionals Union, explained what distributed denial of service is and why is it a form of cyber censorship. Rommel Lopez of PressOnePH talked about the cyberattacks against his media outfit, highlighting that the attacked are linked to their fact-checking efforts during the campaign period. He also testified how the digital attacks affected their newsroom and the public’s access to accurate information. Rhea Padilla, national coordinator of Altermidya, meanwhile, put into context the DDOS attacks on alternative media sites, red-tagging and other forms of violations on press freedom. She also presented efforts to push back against these attacks.
