The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines stands with the International Federation of Journalists and media workers around the world in condemning the bombing of the Al-Jalaa building, which housed the offices of Al Jazeera and the Associated Press, and of other media offices in Gaza.
Israeli airstrikes also destroyed the Al-Shorouk Tower—where the offices of 15 media institutions were located—on May 13 and the Al-Jawhara tower—which hosted 13 media and NGO offices—on May 11, IFJ said in a statement earlier in the week condemning those attacks.
“The targeted bombing of media facilities is a shameful attempt by the Israeli military to silence media reporting of its violence in the Gaza strip and it violates international law,” IFJ General Secretary Anthony Bellanger said then.
IFJ also reported Israeli authorities beating and arresting media workers reporting across the West Bank.
“The impunity which those who deliberately attack journalists enjoy means media workers face an imminent further threat of being targeted. The IFJ will demand justice and an end to the threats in all local, regional and international spheres to ensure that none of these crimes go unpunished,” Bellanger also said then.
Filipino journalists stand in solidarity with our colleagues in demanding a stop to this brazen assault on press freedom.
