About NUJP



Who we are

Since it was formed in 1986, the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) has been advancing the interests of the Filipino working press while promoting free expression and free press. It has over 1,500 members in more than 60 chapters here and abroad.

The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines spearheads various programs and campaigns relevant to press freedom and journalists’ welfare.



Our Officers

The NUJP leadership is composed of the Executive Committee and 15-member Board of Directors, who are elected during the biennial National Congress.

The Executive Committee, which is also part of the Board of Directors, is made up of the Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, Secretary General, Deputy Secretary General, Treasurer and Auditor.

What we do

The NUJP implements various programs, projects, and campaigns in partnership with different local and international organizations to uphold press freedom and protect journalists in the country.

In line with our ideals and advocacies, these activities include the protection of journalists through our Media Safety Office, the skills development of our members and colleagues through various workshops and activities, and technical and legal assistance to media workers and unions.



Media Safety Office

Established in 2005 in partnership with the International Federation of Journalists, the Media Safety Office monitors all forms of attacks against the media, be it threats, attacks, intimidation, or killings. NUJP also keeps track of the legal status of journalist killings, and cases seeking to intimidate journalists, such as criminal libel.



Professional Skills Training

NUJP offers free seminars and workshops on media safety, reporting on corruption, covering peace and conflict, elections, HIV-AIDS and children’s welfare. Over the years, it has collaborated with the International Media Support, International Federation of Journalists, Internews, Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma, the Institute for War and Peace Reporting, among others, to conduct these trainings and to develop modules.


